Looking to add a taste of the tropics to your home? The pineapple plant is an exotic conversation starter that is native to South America- living in a dry, well-drained tropical habitat.

Coming from the bromeliad family, the pineapple themselves are considered the fruit of the plant. With each plant only every bearing one fruit, once the pineapple is ripe, ensure that you keep the parent plant and watch for baby plants to produce around the base. Know that smaller plants will produce smaller pineapples- but they are just as sweet and delicious! You will know when your pineapple is ready because it will be evenly ripe and golden yellow

How to Care for your Pineapple Plant:

  • Light: bright light or full sun
  • Temperature: Pineapples love warm, sunny conditions. Keep it at warm room temperature, ideally between 22-28 °C. Keep the plant away from freezing temperatures. In the winter- Place it in a warm sunny nook (large south-facing window). You can put your plant outside in the summer, but you need to bring the plant inside before the first frost hits.
  • Water: only as needed, keeping the soil lightly moist and never allowing it to become waterlogged or bone dry. They are more likely to be badly affected by overwatering than underwatering.
  • Fertilizer: once a month with a balanced organic fertilizer
  • Growing season: most of the growth will occur in the warmer months. A mature potted plant can grow to be several feet wide and tall.
  • Fruit: How to tell if it is ripe and ready for eating…
    • Colour: the more yellow a pineapple’s exterior is, the riper the fruit will be.
    • Feel: a ripe pineapple will feel very slightly soft when you squeeze it.
    • Smell: If the bottom of it smells ripe, fruity, sweet, and bright, that thing is probably good to go.
