Who doesn’t love fresh herbs?  Herbs smell amazing, boost flavour and offer a number of amazing health benefits!  In fact, they are known to possess better grade vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and essential oils than dried herbs when ingested.

Herbs can also be quite visually appealing when planted together in pots and/or planters.  They can also be grown and used as a natural pest repellant when kept on porches and patios, or when planted in garden beds.

Most herbs prefer full or partial sun.  To ensure optimal fragrance and flavour, it is best to water herbs sparingly.  Herbs do not like wet-feet, so be sure they have adequate drainage.

If you plan on consuming your herbs, we would suggest using an organic slow release pellet or liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks.  It is imperative to avoid over-fertilization of your herbs as this will also reduce their flavour and fragrance.

When harvesting herbs, it is best to do so early in the day, after any early morning dew has dried and before the sun bakes the plants’ essential oils.  Harvesting your herbs regularly encourages new growth and branching.  A general rule of thumb when harvesting herbs is to avoid cutting away more than one-third of the plant.  You may continue to harvest annual herbs right up until frost. Perennial herbs, however, should not be “snipped” much past August.

Those of you who are a little anxious to start planting your gardens, an herb garden or planter is a great place to start! Most vegetables and herbs don’t mind the cooler weather like we are experiencing currently.  However, it is best to keep an eye on the weather and either bring inside or cover your herbs if frost threatens.

Herbs available in-store for planting include: basil, bay, chives, coriander, dill, lavender, leek, mint, oregano, parsley, peppermint, rosemary, spearmint, tarragon and thyme.
