Looking to add some interest to your perennial garden? Whether it’s to attract pollinators or enhance the colour of your landscape- Perennial Sage is a striking option to consider! Recognized by their aromatic and spiky, deep violet-blue flowers, Perennial Sage is considered a garden staple for its compact growth habits and adaptability.

Perennial Sage is an easy-to-grow option that is drought tolerant, and trouble-free. With its eye-catching spikes and deep green foliage, you will notice they are a magnet for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, especially when planted in groupings.

Wondering where you should incorporate Perennial Sage into your garden? You will want to choose a spot that receives direct sunlight for at least 6 hours of the day; some shade is tolerable. Ensure the selected area has well-drained soil; you can do this by digging a hole that is 12-18” deep and wide. Add water to the hole, if the water drains in 10 minutes or less- you’ve found the ideal spot for your Perennial Sage! If drainage exceeds 10 minutes, you will want to add organic matter to the existing soil, such as manure, compost or peat moss.

Here at Anna’s we currently offer one varietiey of Perennial Sage:

Bumbleberry Perennial Sage: Known to bloom in early Summer, this Perennial Sage variety can grow to be 10-12” high with a spread of 12-14”.

More to come…

When it comes time to planting be sure to follow these steps:

  1. Water Perennial in the container.
  2. Dig a hole a little larger than the pot and add some fresh topsoil.
  3. Plant Perennial Sage in the hole and fill remaining gaps with fresh topsoil.
  4. Press plant and soil down lightly, water and fertilize.
  5. Water and deadhead regularly for best blooms.
  6. If the plant gets leggy during the season, cut them all the way back to the newly developed foliage.

For best results, use transplanter fertilized, 5-15-5, as indicated on package directions.

Combine a variety of Perennial Sage into your garden or compliment with Salvia, Lavender and Echinacea to a make a vibrant colour combination!
