I recently listened to a podcast on art & creativity, and they had an interesting point of view, which I never really considered before. That art doesn’t need to be written, performed on stage, or painted on paper…our life, in fact, is the ultimate artistic masterpiece. And to create something, there needs to first be nothingness. To build a beautiful life for yourself, you need to carve out the space. You can’t begin to write the story of your life if the pages are already filled.
I must confess, that one of my winter bucket list activities has been put on the backburner. Can you guess which one? If you guessed ‘make/create something for our home’ you are spot on. And I’m guessing the reason it has been left incomplete is that it’s an activity that I would perform alone. And these days I don’t seem to be allowing myself time for me.
Are you making time for yourself in your life? What can you do to make time for something that is just for you? So many of us will light ourselves on fire to keep others warm. Then, at the end of the day, we are left smouldering.
I know to many of you this may sound crazy, but I set an alarm for 5:30 a.m. just to have some alone time. And even that has now been taken away, as my son has decided that he no longer needs sleep. So, when you feel like there are no options left, what can you possibly do?
For me, the answer is a whisper…baby steps. Because, realistically, I can’t change the events of the world. But I can slowly change the events and routines of my household. If I can’t have alone time in the morning, at the very least I can enjoy a long, hot shower with my favourite song blasting and I can sing my heart out! I may not be able to get out for dinner often, but after the kids are in bed, I can order takeout and set up a board game to play with my husband instead of watching our usual shows.
It is so easy to fall into a rut or settle into a routine that doesn’t necessarily feed our souls. But going into the new year, I AM truly going to evaluate my actions and inactions.
This pandemic has been a challenge for all of us. Countless hobbies and extracurriculars have been put on hold until safer times, date nights have diminished and time away from home may seem like a pipe dream. This winter, during these isolating times, I AM going to get creative. I refuse to let this pandemic get me down! I AM going to pay close attention to the space that has been created in my life and choose wisely when the time comes to fill it.
My hope is that I take some time to also get creative with my physical space. While I’m keeping things socially low-key, I plan to really take a look at the functionality of my home and work towards changing the things that don’t add to my happiness.
I know at Anna’s, you have all helped us to create some space for our art! And during the next couple of months, we will be busy filling the store and making it beautiful for your anticipated arrival in the spring! Thank you for another great season!
As always, wishing you good health, and happiness. And sending along some space for you to enjoy!
Happy Holidays & we look forward to seeing you in the New Year!
